Are you pregnant and considering an abortion? Do you have your abortion scheduled? Although Hope does not provide abortion services or refer for abortions, we can provide you with a free ultrasound and nurse consultation. An ultrasound is an important step before you have an abortion.
An ultrasound can give you three pieces of important information:
- How many weeks you are pregnant. The abortion procedures and risks vary depending upon how far along you are in your pregnancy.
- Verification that your baby has a heartbeat. Almost one third of all pregnancies naturally terminate, and you may not need an abortion.
- Verification that your pregnancy is properly placed inside your uterus. A tubal (ectopic) pregnancy can be dangerous to your health. For this reason, you would be referred immediately to the Emergency Room for a suspected ectopic pregnancy.
We can also offer you information on abortion procedures and give you a list of questions to ask your abortion provider. You deserve the best care, and we can give you information on what you should expect from an abortion provider.
Please note that the limited obstetrical ultrasound examination is not intended to diagnose any abnormalities or problems.
Who will conduct the ultrasound?
Obstetrical ultrasound examinations will be provided by the licensed, Registered Nurses who are trained in limited obstetrical ultrasound. The nurses are female and report to Hope’s volunteer medical director, who reviews each client’s chart.
How should I prepare for an ultrasound?
You do not need to do anything to prepare for your ultrasound. We do recommend that you wear a loose-fitting, two-piece outfit for the examination as this will prevent you from having to re-adjust your clothing during the ultrasound exam.
